Zimbabwe still has to wait another few hours before the “Top School” is crowned but we can rest assured that the winner can only be from Harare or Mutare. Manicaland champions, Mutare Boys High booked their place in tomorrow’s final when they disappointed Peterhouse Boys in front of their home crowd in the on-going Top Schools Basketball tournament.
The second semi-final was postponed to 7am tomorrow due to bad lighting. Churchill will be hoping to knock-out defending champions, Prince Edward in that semi-final. This is one not to missed as it is one of the greatest rivalries in Zimbabwe. I’m positive it will not be turning ugly this time as the venue is neutral and all the boys taking part in the tournament displayed great sportsmanship. The hosts, Peterhouse Boys will play whoever losses the Prince Edward-Churchill encounter for bronze.
Earlier in the day a couple of upsets were on the cards as Jameson School from Kadoma held on to a 9 – 7 lead to disappoint the reigning Midlands champions ,Midlands Christian School. Mutare came from behind to clinch a win in the last-minute of their first game which was against Goromonzi. Founders also gave the defending the champions a good run for their money in an interesting match-up that ended P.E 36, Founders 34.
The standard of play that was on display today is impressive. Nonetheless it’s worrying to note that all the semi-finalists are boys schools. Why are co-educational schools always trailing behind boys’ schools? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
