The magnificent Khumhalo Hockey Stadium in Bulawayo will host a new schools hockey tournament in April this year. Sabi Stars Hockey Tournament as the tournament is titled, will run from the 4th to 7th of April. Over the four days,Khumalo Hockey Stadium will play host to boys and girls aged between 16 and 18 years old.
Invites have been extended to South African schools to take part in the Sabi Stars Hockey Tournament. Their presence is expected to raise the profile of the new tourney. A number of South African Schools have started visiting Zimbabwe in recent years. The Bushman Rock Rugby Challenge which ran for the first time last year hosted Pretoria Boys High, St Andrews and SACS. Later on in the year the St Johns T20 Sponsored by Health International and Bon Marche hosted Michael House and St Andrews.
Both girls and boys will be part of the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe organised tournament and with such a set up the fans seated in 2500 seat grandstand will be assured of great entertainment.
Khumalo Stadium was refurbished in 2011 in preparation for the African Olympic Qualifiers and since then it has been used for various tournaments. Initially constructed in 1995 the stadium had deteriorated due to under-use and lack of maintenance. The Sabi Stars tournament, we believe, is one of the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe’s ways of ensuring that the magnificent Khumalo is put to good use.
It’s these kind of initiatives which give us hope that Zimbabwe can relive it’s glory days as one of the top hockey nations.
