Falcon College were crowned this year’s Inter-Cities Hockey champions on Saturday after they buried Lomagundi College 2 – 0 in the finals at Khumalo Stadium in Bulawayo. The tournament kicked-off on Friday 1 May and ran through to Saturday.
Things were not all perfect for Falcon College en route to the final as they lost 1 – 0 to a defiant Eaglesvale 1st XI in the group stages. However the boys kept their heads up and recorded some inspirational wins on the quick artificial turf along the way to land in the finals.
Despite a great 2 – 1 win for Hellenic against Peterhouse Boys in the group stages, they bowed out of the tourney in the quarter finals going down 3 – 2 to St John’s College. Hippo Valley lost 2 – 1 to Lomagundi in the second quarter-final while Peterhouse Boys secured a semi-final place with a 2 – 0 win over Midlands Christian College in the third quarter-final. The last quarter-final match featured all-time rivals, Falcon College and Christian Brothers College and the former were ruthless winning 3 – 0.
The first semi-final saw Falcon win 2 – 0 against Peterhouse. The other semi-final had to be decided by penalty shoot-outs with Lomagundi emerging triumphant over St John’s College with a 5 – 4 win.
Falcon College’s ability to stretch the Lomagundi defence as well as hold their own defensive line together saw them keeping a clean sheet in their 2 – 0 over the boys from Chinhoyi.
