St John’s College 1st team won 6-5 against Falcon College in the Zwart Invitational final on Sunday 22 September.
Earlier in the day the St John’s College junior team had overcome Falcon College as well, in a penalty shootout to claim the junior title. The tournament hosted in the City of Kings (Bulawayo) featured seven of the best boys water-polo teams. Prince Edward, St George’s, Hellenic Academy, St John’s, Peterhouse, Falcon and Christian Brothers College were contenders for the trophy.
Along the way to the final, St John’s College enjoyed sweet revenge, inflicting a 9-1 defeat on Hellenic Academy. Hellenic Academy beat St John’s 7-6 last week in Harare.
St John’s head boy and first team captain, Thomas Chadwick was impressed by the win, as well as the standard of the sport in Zimbabwe. Chadwick said, “At the start of the tournament, we were playing a very wild, unstructured game, but towards the end, and especially in the final, we picked up our game and played some exhilarating water-polo. Something that is nice to see is the continued high standard of water-polo in Zimbabwe and the Crusader Shield in two weeks promises to be a very competitive weekend.”
