St John’s College school boy Kyle Hinde and Chisipite Senior school girl Daniella du Toit flew back into Harare from Tunisia where they rowed for Zimbabwe, in the Africa Youth Olympic Games Qualifier.
The qualifiers which took place in Tunis Lake from October 7 to October 9 was attended by 17 African nations, including Zimbabwe. The different teams raced either in pairs or in single sculls. Teams present were Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Morocco, Namibia, Senegal, Sudan, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
Since Zimbabwe does not – as a rule – race pairs, they sent a male and female single sculler. Hinde was placed third in the Junior Men’s Single Scull (JM1x) behind Tunisia and Egypt. In the Junior Women’s Single Scull (JW1x) du Toit raced home in second place behind Tunisia, ahead of the Egyptian representative who came third.
In the single sculls, the top 3 nations’ boats qualified, resulting in Zimbabwe having qualified two boats for the Youth Olympic Games next year. Next year’s Youth Olympic Games take place in the Chinese city of Nanjing in August.
