The Zimbabwe U17 cricket squad played out to a draw against Boland at the Stellenbosch University Grounds in Stellenbosch but lost the match on 1st innings.
There were a few nerves for Zimbabwe as the Boland picked up wickets of the two openers – Edward Byrom and Nick Welch for zero with the fifth and thirteenth ball of the first innings. The Jeremy Ives – Richard Lock partnership steadied the Zimbabwean ship adding 21 runs to the board in 5.1 overs. After Ives’ dismissal, Gary King took to the crease and batted well but he kept running out of partners as Boland’s strike ripped through Zimbabwe’s middle order. King who was voted Player of the Year in a recent poll on this site top scored for Zimbabwe in the 1st innings with 44 runs of 80 deliveries.
Zimbabwe totalled 126 runs in 51.1 overs played over 194 minutes in the 1st innings while Boland scored 159 off 45.4 overs played over 189 minutes. E Moses top scored for Boland in the 1st innings with 39 runs. Kundai Matigimu posted figures of 3/22 while Brad Evans posted 3/27.
Welch redeemed himself in the 2nd innings top-scoring for Zimbabwe with 51 runs. With that performance he made to the number 10 spot on the top batsmen table for day 1 of the Cricket South Africa U17 week. Welch’s half ton came off 51 deliveries. Zimbabwe’s efforts in the 2nd innings came to nothing as Boland won on 1st innings.
The Zimbabwean lads play Kwazulu Natal at 9.00am at Somerset West in Stellenbosch. We at SSN wish them well.
