St George’s College won their fifth game on the trot to make it five out of five this year so far. Playing against Eaglesvale in their own backyard is never easy but Saints stood tall and registered a 53-35 win over the Valians yesterday afternoon (29-January-2014).
Eaglesvale was playing in their first match of the season but made some trouble for St George’s, imposing their physicality on the visitors. St George’s drew first blood scoring one from outside the key to go three points clear before Tanatswa Chakamanga scored Eaglesvale first basket of the year 2014 to get his team on the board.
The hosts were guilty of missing a lot shots under the hoop and it was not difficult to tell who has had more game time of the two teams. Saints’ skipper, Wolfgang was phenomenal under either hoop, collecting rebounds on offence and defence. At the end of the first quarter the scores were 10-7 to St George’s College. Eaglesvale brought themselves up in the second period of play to make it a three-point game going into the half-time break, Saints leading 22-19.
Just like how they broke Peterhouse Boys in their first season game, St George’s upped the tempo in the third quarter. Saints restricted Eaglesvale to only one basket in this period of play while they brought their tally up to 35 at the other end of the quarter.
Eaglesvale staged a late come back but it was exactly that, “late” and St George’s went on to win 53-35 away from home. St George’s have so far played Peterhouse, Watershed, Gateway, Falcon and Eaglesvale, winning all games to set-up a lightning start to their season campaign.
