The Chisipite U19 girls held on to a one goal lead against a well rounded Hellenic side to claim the Warwick Smith Cup final on Sunday afternoon(9-Feb-2014) at Chisipite Senior School.
Chisipite Senior School which is celebrating its diamond anniversary this year played host to Peterhouse, Hellenic and Girls College for what turned out to be a very interesting waterpolo weekend. Each of the schools fielded one U15 team, an U17 team and one U19 team. Only the senior teams were in the running for the Warwick Smith Cup.
It had threatened to rain all morning on Sunday with some showers being experienced after mid-morning but the skies cleared up for the senior girls’ final 12:15pm start. The sun shining over the pool might have resembled the great sportsmanship exhibited by players from both sides but it was a clear contrast to the heavy contest that ensued soon after the umpire’s whistle.
Goalies from both ends kept clean sheets in the opening chukka displaying some awesome saves that had the now-very-attentive crowd on their feet. The second chukka started in similar fashion – hotly contested upfront and great defences – but Hellenic opened the scoring with Chisipite finding the back of the net shortly after the restart. Natasha Lawson scored a spectacular no-look goal for Hellenic at the death of the clock to put her team in front going in to the half time break.
Chisipite pulled an equalizer after the interval before scoring a goal that put them in front for the first time during the final. With the opposition defences now tighter, Hellenic had to dig deep to find an equaliser and that they did to level things up at 3-3 as the last chukka got underway.
A beautiful lobbed floating ball from some 5 metres out found the back of the Hellenic goal to give the hosts a 4-3 lead. A lead they would defend for the remaining six minutes of that last chukka. Superb use of the shot clock and great goal keeping by Chisipite denied Hellenic that one goal to level things up and Chisipite won 4-3.
