Day 2 of the Senior National Swimming Championships taking place at the Les Brown Pool in Harare was full of excitement and action for the swimmers as well as the spectators who filled the stands today.
History is repeating itself at the Championships with Mashonaland dominating as they have done in recent years at the nationals. Matabeleland had it’s fair share of success during day 2 at Les Brown. Clearly it’s numbers at work here as the smaller provinces struggled to post points to challenge Mashonaland and Matland. By end of proceedings, this evening at Les Brown, Manicaland was in fifth place with 33 points, behind Midlands who had 44 points. MCD is in third place with 108 points while Matland’s tally is 541. Mashonaland are the pack leaders with a staggering 1083 points.
Medals presentations took place during the short session break in the afternoon and again, the host province dominated. Nonetheless some of that gold went Matland’s and MCD’s way. Nomvula Mjimba of Mashonaland girls and Joash McKonie of Matland boys were very impressive today in the 12 and under division, registering podium finishes in all their finals.
The Championships continue tomorrow, with the opening ceremony in the morning getting proceddings started for day 3 before event 15 – mixed 100m freestyle heats – start at 9:30am. There will be a break after event 19 with the Championships resuming at 3:30pm.
