Woman of the match, Shannon Clare, scored a brace to see Gateway first team soccer beat Arundel 3-1 on a Wednesday afternoon (May 20) in a hotly contested match of twenty-minute halves. Last year Gateway beat Arundel in the final match of the season that witnessed a serious injury to an Arundel player.
Arundel began the game on an impressive note with Nyasha Chigerwe scoring a goal just seconds after the starting whistle. Gateway’s Clare retaliated with a wide shot which was intercepted by Arundel’s number one goalkeeper. Minutes later Clare’s second shot on goal connected to end the first half by evening the score 1-1.
Solid possession from Arundel brought the ball down the field in the second half, but forward Ropafadzo Korovedzai shot over the top of the goal. Gateway’s defense strengthened, leading to midfielders carrying the ball comfortably down the field. T. Garapho made their second goal, a beautiful shot hitting the net on the top left corner, bringing the score to 2-1.
Arundel missed two crucial opportunities with corner kicks, allowing Gateway to dominate the play in the second half. Clare dribbled down the field and took advantage of an opening in the Arundel defense to score the final goal and end the match 3-1.
