Absolute Athlete of the Week – Tatenda Zinyengerere

This week’s Absolute Athlete of the Week for Monday, 13 February is Prince Edward Form 1 long distance runner Tatenda Zinyengerere.   Although he seemingly effortlessly won both Watershed and Arundel Cross Country meets, it is Zinyengerere’s seventh place finish at Lomagundi College this past Friday, 10 February 2017, which earns him this honor.

Prince Edward had the misfortune of their school bus getting not one, but two tyre punctures on the road from Harare to Chinhoyi, and missing the junior race.  As the bus pulled up to Lomagundi, the U17 boys were taking off for their race.  Zinyengere, who was scheduled for the U15, and seven colleagues, jumped off the bus and ran to join the race, leaving about five minutes after the rest of the runners.

Despite this tremendous handicap, Zinyengere ran his heart out, overtook dozens of runners and finished an impressive seventh. For his determination and talent, he is the Absolute Athlete of the Week.

Well done, Tatenda.
