This Sunday (11 October 2015) Chisipite Senior School hosts the final of the tradition-laden Melbury Cup for girls’ tennis. Hosts Chisipite face Hellenic Academy in what promises to be an exciting final match, whose outcome is anyone’s call.
Last year Arundel upset Peterhouse in the final, winning the coveted Melbury Cup for the first time in its 46 year history. In 2013, Arundel lost narrowly in the final to Chisipite; this year they will play the 3rd place consolation match against Dominican Convent Harare.
The tournament, which takes place in stages throughout third term of the school year, involves eight top tennis teams from around Zimbabwe: Arundel, Bulawayo Convent, Chisipite, Girls College Bulawayo, Harare Convent, Hellenic, Lomagundi, and Peterhouse.
In preliminary stages, Chisipite beat Bulawayo Convent 6-2, while Arundel defeated Lomagundi at home 7-1. Hellenic upset Peterhouse at home 6-2 while Harare Convent overcame Girls College in a tiebreaker after both teams conceded and won four matches a piece.
In the B tournament final Sunday, host Chisipite’s B team will play against Arundel’s B team.
