The St John’s College U14 cricket side held off strong competition from rivals St George’s College in the final on Saturday night (7 November) to win the Hellenic Day and Night Cricket Tournament.
The one day festival for the junior cricketers made a return having last taken place in 2013. Construction taking place at Hellenic Academy last year meant they couldn’t host the tournament, but they pulled off a good show last weekend. Setting up lights safe enough for 13 year olds to play cricket at night is no easy feat.
Eight schools took part in the tournament. Prince Edward finished third ahead of hosts Hellenic, while Peterhouse and Churchill claimed fifth and sixth place. Travelling all the way from Bulawayo, Christian Brothers College put on a decent showing, but only able to salvage seventh place ahead of Eaglesvale who finished eighth.
Zimbabwe international cricketer Hamilton Masakadza was the Guest of Honor at the junior tournament, and he handed over the awards as the curtain came down. B. James of Christian Brothers College won the Top Batsmen award, while M. Manikai of Peterhouse was named the Best Bowler of the tournament. Champions St John’s College had two of the players receiving individual top performance awards: T. O’riordan won the Best Wicket Keeper award and B. Mason was named the Best All-rounder.
