Two Harare Students Qualify For Chicago World Championships

Youth Olympian Drew Williams of St John’s College and Rebecca Duncan of Chisipite Senior School have earned Zimbabwe slots at the ITU World Triathlon Championships set for Chicago, USA this September.

Williams and Duncan both finished fourth in their respective races at the ATU African Triathlon  and Pan-Arab Championships that were held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt recently. Duncan raced in the Junior Women’s event in a time of 1:07.51, while Williams completed the Junior Men’s in 1:03.49.

Zimbabwe Triathlon Association President Rick Fulton confirmed the ITU Championship qualification for the two. Fulton went on to explain that although Williams and Duncan qualified with their times and finishes in Egypt, their slots are as representatives of Zimbabwe.  So if for any reason they turned them down, the slots would then go to other Zimbabwean triathletes.

The Chicago event is the Grand Final for the ITU World Triathlon Series and will double as the ITU World Championships. Over 150 Olympians will descend on the Windy City to compete for world honors in the senior élite division. Williams and Duncan will compete in the Junior World Championship races that will take place on Thursday, September 17.
